The first-ever Area Code regional workout was held at the NEBC Saturday, September 27th. All three fields were devoted to 125 of the top prospects in the Northeast region in a series of drills, evaluations, and positional workouts. The weather was perfect… even warm for the six hours that involved much more than just workouts. The Area Code Games, held each summer in Long Beach, California, are considered among the most selective and competitive baseball events for college prep ballplayers in the United States. Area Code teams are supported and staffed by Major League Baseball scouts and organizations. The new initiative, sponsored by New Balance, is designed to create high-end workouts at top venues around the United States. The event at NEBC was the very first in the country, and by all accounts, it was highly successful. Instruction was manned by professional scouts from several MLB organizations, led by Matt Hyde, Area Scout for the New York Yankees. Others in attendance were Oakland, Tampa Bay, San Diego, LA Angels.
New Balance, the Boston based shoe and apparel company, is a sponsor of the Area Code Games. The September 27th event provided an opportunity for New Balance to demonstrate to serious baseball players that it is a company committed to baseball at the high-performance level. There are many MLB players using New Balance equipment, including Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz. The association with Area Code and the next several high school classes of prospects is a welcome initiative that will serve baseball players and organizations well.
Eric Cressey, founder and director of Cressey Performance, was integrally involved in the day’s activities. His expertise is familiar to many players in our region. He also enjoys a rapidly expanding national reputation as one of the foremost experts in baseball-specific strength and performance training. Cressey Performance serves professional, collegiate, and high school athletes. Many players in the Ruffnecks program and in other area travel programs find Mr. Cressey an important and valuable resource.
Players attending the Area Code Workout on September 27th were there by invitation ONLY and do not pay a fee to participate. The New England Baseball Complex is pleased to support Area Code and their fine organization.
